‘Usable by All’ (UBA) is an initiative that aims to reform public infrastructure and digital services, so that they can be used independently by people with sensory impairment and mobility issues. We want to create a world where our roadways, schools, transportation hubs, government facilities, factories, offices and places of recreation are easily accessible to people who have special needs. Since digital service are an essential part of our lives, we also want to make digital devices, their operating systems, software applications, websites, web applications and smart phone apps convenient enough so they can be used independently by people having sensory impairment or mobility issues.
According to a March 2023 report of the World Health Organization, there are estimated 1.3 billion people who have significant disability. This data indicates that existing public infrastructure and digital services may not be suitable for about 16% of human population.
Through rampant pursuit of inconsiderate design, we have created a world that does not offer a level playing field to people with special needs. So, we want to create an active community that works towards transforming public infrastructure and digital services through inclusive design and planning.
Our goal is to ensure that public infrastructure and digital services are transformed in order to make them usable by all. And, we intend to achieve this through advocacy, activism and direct involvement.
UBA'S SHORT Term PLANS
Our long term plans are detailed in the UBA Action Plan. For the near future, we have identified the following tasks that need to be completed ASAP.
Incorporate UBA as a non-profit organization (NGO) across one or more countries.
Set up head office and form a core team of highly committed individuals.
Prepare policy framework and SOPs to guide our present / future actions.
People with sensory impairment / mobility issues are our key stake holders. We want to build an engaged community involving them and people associated with them.
At this juncture we really need to build a corpus of funds in order to be able to initiate our operations. However, you can also help us in many other ways.
We invite people and organizations to contribute funds which will be used to start and propagate the UBA initiative.
We need to understand the challenges that people with sensory impairment / mobility issues face while using public infrastructure or digital services.
If you are drawn to the idea of UBA, then we invite you to join our community. We want people with sensory impairment / mobility issues, health care providers, law makers, social workers, academics, researchers, and visionaries to join the UBA community.
To support UBA and to help us grow, please give us social media mention using the hashtag #usablebyall and also talk about us to as many people as you can.
